Can Infertility Doctors Really Help?

Couples who have been trying to conceive and been unable to do so often turn to infertility doctors. The good news is that these medical professionals can often help the couple find out what’s happening and get back on the path to becoming parents. Here are some examples of what the doctor will do on behalf of the patients.

Complete Evaluation of Medical History

It’s not unusual for infertility doctors to begin by reviewing the complete medical history of both parties. The goal is to determine if there is any previous health issues that could have hampered the reproductive ability of either person. If something is found, this provides a better idea of what avenues of treatment to pursue. It’s important for couples to remember that a condition in the past does not necessarily mean that conceiving a child in the typical fashion is impossible.

Arranging for Tests

Whatever the results of the medical history review, most infertility doctors will arrange for full physical examinations for both parties. That includes a number of blood and other tests. The goal is to determine if hormone levels are within acceptable ranges, the quality of sperm, and the condition of the eggs. If past medical history did not reveal a physical reason for trouble conceiving the examinations and test results will often identify the underlying cause.

Discussing Options

There are more treatments for infertility today than many people realize. The good news is that

infertility doctors are aware of those treatments, the level of success associated with each one, and even any possible side effects associated with a given course of treatment. This is important since it provides the couple with the opportunity to compare potential approaches and determine which one they would like to pursue.

Keep in mind that more than one treatment option may be viable. If one strategy does not result in a pregnancy, there is the potential for trying another approach.

Providing Encouragement Along the Way

While infertility doctors do not promise their patients that they will eventually be able to conceive, these medical professionals strive to help couples understand what is happening and what can be done to help. Assuming one of the current methods available would be appropriate, the doctor will encourage the couple to begin the treatment and to also remain patient.
