Fertility Treatments and IVF Frequently Asked Questions

Fertility Doctor Tina Koopersmith Answers Frequently Asked Questions

At West Coast Women’s Reproductive Center, we are passionate about patient education so that you are fully informed about your health and well-being. We are here to answer any and all of your questions; these are a just a few of our most frequently asked for your easy reference.

Have a question?

If you have a personal question or one that isn’t addressed below, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always here for you!

How long do fertility treatments usually take?

In vitro fertilization (IVF) cycles generally take 2-6 weeks, which includes taking pretreatment contraceptive pills and fertility drugs, the egg retrieval process, and then followed by the embryo transfer (3-5 days later). Frequently the embryo transfer will be delayed and done the following month.

An Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) cycle takes approximately two weeks (with or without ovarian stimulation medications).

In IVF, how many embryos are usually transferred?

This depends on your age, your history of prior failed IVF cycles and your own personal preference. We do, however, adhere to the guidelines published by the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM). Your fertility doctor will discuss the options with you, and together you will make the best decision for you and your family.

Do you offer male infertility evaluations?

Evaluating your male partner’s fertility is definitely part of the process. When you come to our office for infertility treatment, we take a medical history and perform semen analyses on your male partner. If anything significant is uncovered, we will then refer your partner to an urologist or endocrinologist who specializes in evaluating and treating male fertility issues.

Do you only treat married couples?

At the West Coast Women’s Reproductive Center, we provide treatment for married and unmarried couples, same sex couples and single women and men.

Do you recommend IVF for all patients?

While IVF is a highly effective, common fertility treatment, we look at your specific situation and make recommendations for the best possible outcome for you. At your initial consultation, your fertility doctor will discuss the various treatment options with you, and following a complete evaluation, she will make her recommendations. There may be less invasive and less expensive treatments that are appropriate for you to begin with, or it may be recommended that you start off right away with IVF.

Can I get pregnant if I am in menopause?

It is a definite possibility, thanks to technology! If you have already gone through menopause, you may well be able to conceive using donor eggs. Your fertility doctor will have to first evaluate you and then she will make her recommendation.
