What is Intrauterine Insemination?
Intrauterine insemination, also known as IUI, or artificial insemination, is a relatively simple fertility treatment that involves placing sperm directly inside a woman’s uterus in order to promote fertilization. It can be performed with or without fertility drugs, and the procedure involves transferring specially washed semen – delivered directly into the uterus using a thin catheter.

How Does it Work?
The process involves collecting semen, and then separating the sperm from the semen. The removed sperm is concentrated and activated, and then a small amount of the fastest swimming sperm is placed into the uterus. This process is performed while the woman is ovulating.
IUI Success Rate
Fertility medications are often given to women undergoing IUI in order to help her ovaries produce additional eggs. If there is a low sperm count or motility, intrauterine insemination success rates are typically around 5-10% – when ovarian stimulation is used. For patients who are experiencing unexplained infertility, the IUI success rate is typically around 8-15% per month.
