How Age Affects Fertility

Age and Conception

As you may know, age plays a critical role in the success of conception, which is why it’s so important for you to understand when and why fertility declines, and to learn how we can help support you in making decisions that will improve your chances of becoming pregnant when you desire.

What Is The Ideal Child Bearing Age?

The ideal child bearing years are in your twenties; fertility declines as you progress through your thirties and beyond, as illustrated in this chart below. If you are over 35 and want to conceive, come in and talk to our fertility specialists about your health and well-being – we are here to help you do all you can to get the results you want.

The Aging Process and Fertility

As women age, their ovarian reserve (number of eggs), typically decreases not just in quantity, but also in quality. In other words, your ovary and eggs age as you do. So there are fewer eggs trying to ovulate monthly, and there are also more possible mistakes in the resulting embryo’s chromosomes. This increases rates of infertility and miscarriages as well as incidences of Down Syndrome and other genetic errors. Eventually as a woman ages and gets closer to menopause, there are even more cycles with no ovulations, which means it is almost impossible to conceive without assistance from a fertility specialist.

Together We’ll Find A Way

If you are over 35 and want to conceive, come in and talk to our fertility specialists about your health and well-being – we are here to help you do all you can to get the results you want. We care for women with fertility challenges every single day – we create custom plans to tackle infertility with the latest, best technology for each individual patient. If you’re in your early thirties and are thinking about either trying to conceive immediately or know you’d like to have the option later on, considering having an AMH test to determine your “ovarian age.” If that number is low, you may want to start trying to conceive right away or may want to consider freezing your eggs to preserve your fertility for when you are ready to conceive a child.

We look forward to meeting you, learning about you, and helping you to be healthy and happy. To schedule an appointment you can call the West Coast Women’s Reproductive Center at (818) 616-9277 or make an appointment online.
