Male infertility

Male infertility is a medical condition that affects men. With this condition, men are less likely to impregnate their female companion with unprotected sex. It is a common issue that prevents couples from conceiving. Low sperm production or irregular sperm delivery are factors to why male infertility occurs.

What are the Causes?

In order to get a female pregnant, healthy sperm needs be successfully implanted into the woman’s body. Sperm is the male reproductive cell needed to impregnate a woman. It is produced in the testicles. If the sperm is compromised in any way it could cause infertility. Problems with sperm include incorrect movement, unusual shape, incomplete growth, and sparsity.

There are many factors that cause these problems with sperm. One huge factor of sperm deficiency is lifestyle choices. If a man smokes cigarettes, drinks alcoholic beverages, and takes specific kinds of medications, sperm count can be greatly affected. Medications, like antidepressants and high blood pressure drugs, are known to alter the sperm’s structure and delivery. Smoking and alcohol are not only harmful to a man’s overall health, but it greatly damages the quality of their sperm. The second cause of damaged sperm is sickness. Chronic illnesses and childhood infections may damage the male reproductive system and lead to unhealthy sperm development. Other causes of male infertility are retrograde ejaculation and hormone problems.

Treatment Options for Male Infertility

There are several treatment options for male infertility. Visiting a male infertility specialist will help determine the treatment needed. The doctor will run a series of diagnostic tests such as a hormone evaluation, a testicular biopsy, and a sperm and semen analysis. Once the problem is discovered, the doctor may recommend treatments such as surgery to clear up a blockage in the affected area or medication to fix low hormone levels. Another way to treat male infertility is by utilizing effective procedures like intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF). These methods can increase a woman’s chances of conceiving. It is also important to refrain from any tobacco use and limit alcohol consumption. Doing these two things will greatly improve the quality and quantity of sperm production. Also, avoid taking hot baths and getting into whirlpools so sperm production does not slow down. Get plenty of sleep each night and maintain a healthy, balanced diet too.
