Embracing the Magic of Halloween:
A Message from Dr. Tina Koopersmith
Hello, my dear readers, and a very Happy Halloween to you all!
Today, I wanted to take a moment to share my thoughts on this enchanting holiday and why it holds a special place in my heart.
Halloween: A Day for Dreams and Desires
As I sat down for my morning journaling, I couldn’t help but reflect on the unique appeal of Halloween. It’s a day that’s all about dreaming and embracing our desires. Whether you’re a child eagerly anticipating a night of trick-or-treating or an adult who still holds a special place for the inner child within, Halloween is a reminder that our dreams and desires are worth celebrating.
Embracing Our Mortality
Halloween is often associated with themes of fear, death, horror, and terror, reminding us of our own mortality. Now, that might sound morbid, but it doesn’t have to be. Instead, it can serve as a crucial reminder to live each day to the fullest. It’s a nudge to always say “I love you,” to be kind, and to design our lives so that we have no regrets. Let’s break free from the cocoon of our old lives and emerge as the beautiful butterflies we are, shedding the layers of responsibilities and labels.
Children and the Magic of Life
Children have an extraordinary ability to find wonder in the simplest of things—a new leaf, a new taste, a new pair of shoes. Life, to them, is truly magical. A child’s birth serves as a reminder to all of us about the incredible magic of life.
On Halloween, children have the opportunity to play, dream, and dress up. When they put on costumes, they are reminded that they are not so different from their favorite superheroes. Those idols were once children who grew into something special. This child, too, is something extraordinary right now and will become a superhero in the future. We all have the potential to be superheroes by persevering through life’s challenges and continuing to move forward, one step at a time.
The Ripple Effect of Kindness
We should never underestimate the power of a kind word, a smile, a warm hug, or a meaningful connection made through eye contact. These simple gestures have the potential to brighten someone’s day and set off a ripple effect of positivity.
Adults, Be Brave and Dream
To all the parents, teachers, mentors, and adults out there, I encourage you to consider dressing up on Halloween. What costume would you like to wear? Who would you like to be? What dreams have you yet to fulfill? There is no better time than now to pivot and make a change. Even a small shift in your life’s direction today can lead to an entirely new life in the years to come.
The Power of Overcoming Fear
As adults, we often find ourselves jaded and worn out, bombarded by noise and the anxieties of the past and future. Fear can keep us from staying present in the moment, but it’s essential to remember that fear often stands for “False Evidence Appearing Real.” Halloween, with its darkness and the unknown, can symbolize a transition into a time of reflection, hibernation, germination, and growth.
Dress Up, Dream, and Embrace Your Inner Child
Halloween isn’t just a day for costumes and candy. It’s a day for dreaming, for celebrating desires, and for embracing the inner child within us. So, let’s not be afraid of the dark. Instead, let’s welcome the illumination that comes from within, from knowing ourselves on a deeper level. Be curious, live in the moment, and always remember that the magic of life is all around us.
Happy Halloween, my friends! Trick or treat, smell my feet, give me something good to eat, and don’t forget to dream big.
